Artist's Statement
Many years of formal study inform my work which conceptualizes the Cape Cod landscape. In dialogue with art history past and present, I have been influenced by the aggressive painterly works of Joan Snyder and Joan Mitchell, as well as the quiet linear works of Richard Diebenkorn and Piet Mondrian. I use the seductive lure of oil paint to describe the wild, organic world. The clarity of light reflecting the nearby ocean, and the abundance of gardens all influence the palette and subject matter of my abstract paintings. The abstracted garden series is a response to the impressive plantings my husband feverishly cultivates each Spring. I present an alchemy of emotional color, etched with intimate, tactile forms. Vines, buds, flora, and invented natural matter appear and then fade under layers of gestural brush stroke. Each painting begins with a general color idea and subject matter. Over several sessions I build up the layers, textures and detail to enrich the depth of relationships within the picture plane. When there is sufficient balance and complexity the process is complete and I offer the paintings to the viewer's fresh vision.
